Mlajši otroci prenašajo zadrževanje krajše obdobje, pri dojenčkih pa se posebej priporoča, da se izogibajo zelo dolgim neprekinjenim obdobjem v otroškem sedežu, saj lahko vzdrževanje polsedečega položaja več ur vpliva na dihanje pri zelo majhnih otrocih. Pri malčkih in starejših otrocih je omejitev vedenjska in ne fiziološka, vendar ni nič manj resnična.

Uporaba zadrževalnega sistema

Sistemski pregledi poškodb otrok v prometnih nesrečah [1] in intervencij v varnosti na cesti [2][3] dosledno identificirajo pravilno uporabo zadrževalnega sistema kot glavni zaščitni dejavnik. Beseda, ki dela delo, je pravilno — zloraba je pogosta, in sedež, nameščen ohlapno ali s prepletenimi trakovi, deluje daleč pod svojo oceno.

Na dolgem potovanju je vredno preveriti namestitev pred odhodom, ne pa ob prvem postanku, in vredno je vedeti, da mnoge države ponujajo brezplačne storitve preverjanja.
